Missions were carried out in Muscat, Oman, and the cities of Tehran and Isfahan in the Islamic Republic of Iran in April 2013 to assess the competencies and capacities of national influenza centres and explore their potential to serve as regional reference centres for influenza surveillance in the Region.

The missions also provided an opportunity to review ongoing collaboration on the regional external quality assessment programme, on the PulseNet-Middle East Network of Public Health and Food Regulatory Agency laboratories, and explore additional opportunities for collaboration.
