At the end of January 2020, a total of 2519 laboratory-confirmed cases of Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), including 866 associated deaths (case-fatality rate: 34.3%) were reported globally. The majority of these cases were reported from Saudi Arabia (2121 cases), including 788 related deaths with a case-fatality rate of 37.1%. Since the last update was published (December MERS situation update), a total of 17 new laboratory-confirmed cases of MERS were reported globally. 26 April 2016 -- During the month of March 2016, a surge in the number of primary cases was reported from 5 different regions in Saudi Arabia. These include Riyadh, Najran, Hail, Qaseem and Asir.  A new cluster of MERS cases linked to a hospital was reported from Buridah city of the Qassim region during March. The hospital outbreak began in February and within about 3 weeks (22 February to 12 March), a total of  23 cases of MERS, including 7 deaths were reported from this region. Highlights A total of 8 laboratory-confirmed cases, including 2 deaths, were reported in Saudi Arabia in the past week. Primary cases continue to increase in several locations in the country. The majority of cases continue to be male. The most affected age group among primary cases is those between 50 and 59 years old. The most affected age group among secondary cases is those between 30 and 39 years old. The median age of cases in years is 50.
