Intercountry workshop on ageing and health in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, 20-22 September 2011

The meeting was attended by national health of the elderly focal points from ministries of health and WHO staff.

     The objectives of the meeting were to:

  • review the implementation of the activities, suggested in the plan of action of the regional strategy for active, healthy ageing and old age care in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (2006-2015)
  • draw up a road map for enhancing the implementation of age-friendly initiatives, including the capacity-building component and other various related aspects
  • identify best approaches, mechanisms and tools for strengthening the advocacy, networking and sharing of information on active, healthy ageing and old age care at regional and national level
  • suggest feasible activities for utilizing the theme of World Health Day 2012 “Ageing and health” to create sustainable momentum for active and healthy ageing and old age in the countries of the Region.

        

Statistics and figures

In the Eastern Mediterranean Region it is projected that by 2025, older persons will make up nearly 8.7% of the population, and by 2050 nearly 15%, of the population.
