Sana’a, 20 November 2013 — WHO Yemen celebrates the 60th anniversary of setting up its first office in Yemen. The celebration will include a series of events that will take place over the coming months.

In 20 November 1953, WHO was one of the few international organizations to be established in Yemen. Since then, the Organization has created effective partnerships with the public sector, nongovernmental organizations and international donors to progress towards better health conditions in the country which was suffering from lack of basic health services.

With the WHO’s direct intervention, Yemen has seen the eradication of several diseases such as polio, chicken pox, Guinea worm disease and Smallpox.

Over the years, WHO supported the provision of health services and huge number of people and children in the remote areas were reached. As the years passed, the organization expanded its presence in different hard-to-reach areas.

“Our ambition isn’t limited to what we have achieved so far. We have high aspiration for eradicating other diseases and reaching international goals towards advancing the health situation in Yemen,” said Dr Ahmed Shadoul, WHO Representative for Yemen.

“The trust of people in our Organization always motivates us to work hard and keep moving our activities along,” he added.

Over the last six decades, WHO has worked in critical and volatile situations. Despite the harsh circumstances and severe clashes that Yemen has been through, the Organization continued to provide health services in different areas, including conflict-affected areas.
