About World Health Day 2006 

The theme of this year’s World Health Day is the health workforce crisis. Many factors contribute to this crisis:

  • underinvestment in workers’ education, training, skills and salaries

  • inappropriate and deterrent working environment

  • national and international migration.

The World Health Day celebration is an opportunity to highlight the health workforce crisis and find solutions to this complex problem at global, regional and national levels. It is also a chance to show appreciation for those working for health.

Saving lives: status is not a concern
Here is a story of a Pakistani doctor who set a marvelous example of devotion, commitment and self sacrifice. During the devastating earthquake that hit Pakistan last October, he, accompanied by his team, was the first to move to the field, setting his tent among the wreckage and providing life-saving interventions to hundreds of victims. He is an eminent kidney transplant surgeon who usually works in tertiary care. Immediately after the earthquakes, he moved voluntarily to the community level of care.
