Image shows cover of publication entitled WHO report on the global tobacco epidemic, 2011: Warning about the dangers of tobacco. In the WHO report on the global tobacco epidemic, 2011: Warning about the dangers of tobacco, evidence is presented that large, graphic health warnings on tobacco packages motivate people to stop using tobacco and reduce the appeal for people who are not yet addicted.

The use of large graphic health warnings is among the six tobacco control measures recommended by WHO. Other measures include: monitoring tobacco use; protecting people from tobacco smoke; helping users to quit; enforcing bans on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship; and raising taxes on tobacco. Each measure corresponds to at least one provision of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.

This report is the third in a series of WHO reports on global tobacco control implementation. The international launch of the report took place on 7 July 2011 in Montevideo, Uruguay.
