World No Tobacco Day 2002
Tobacco free sports

The international sports coalition

To support and fulfill this year's theme of Tobacco Free Sports, WHO has been working with prominent athletes to take forth the message that sports and tobacco do not mix. WHO has put together an international coalition comprising of 12 athletes to represent each of WHO's six regions (two representatives per region) during the celebrations of the 2002 WNTD that will coincide with the World Cup Kick-Off in South Korea.

Within the Eastern Mediterranean Region, Mr. Imran Khan from Pakistan, former cricket player and Captain of the Pakistan Cricket Team and, Mr. Mahmoud El-Khatib from Egypt, former football player and Captain of the Egypt National Team, were selected to represent and communicate the message of Tobacco Free Sports. These two figures were chosen for their commitment to tobacco control and their unparalleled fame in the sports arena even after having stepped down as players.
