Health professionals

Our hospitals, are they healthy? As health professionals what have we done to help in setting a good example to our young people and patients? How many times have you heard a patient say "my doctor advised me not to smoke but he was holding the cigarette in his hand"? In your area how many hospitals were declared tobacco free? Are we doing our job? How should we start?

Many questions, with well-known answers. Despite the fact that the health hazards of smoking, both for smokers and for non-smokers, are widely known, smoking is still permitted in many health care premises. Also many countries in the Eastern Mediterranean Region still report a high prevalence of smoking among health professionals. We can start with our hospitals patients, go accompanied by their relatives and friends, for treatment. Let us spread the message by making our hospitals and private clinics tobacco free. It has happened in other places and together we can do it. If you are a doctor, a nurse, or a dentist you are a health professional and you can be a role model... you can lead and make a difference in your community. Do not wait … Do it now.
