Potentiality
of
local
vaccine
production
Following
the
request
of
the
Ministry
of
Health,
WHO
conducted
a
mission
to
seek
the
potentiality
and
feasibility
to
produce
vaccines
in
Syria.
The
terms
of
reference
of
the
mission
are
as
follows:
-
Assess the capacity and potentiality of some pharmaceutical manufactures in Syria that showed the desire to expand their portfolio in producing vaccines.
-
Assess the current situation: human and technical capacities, facilities and financial resources.
-
Identify the needs in case of existing potential for producing vaccines
-
Identify the needs and requirements to implement for producing vaccines
-
Suggest options to enhance vaccine production based on the current status and capacity of the pharmaceutical companies
-
Provide information on the vaccine market, needs in terms of vaccine supply, challenges faced in the vaccine procurement
The
mission
was
carried
out

The
mission
was
organized
in
two
parts:
-
A
seminar
on
vaccines
and
meeting
with
Management
of
Pharmaceutical
Companies
which
has
declared
interest
in
the
activities.
-
Visits
of
facilities
(Ultra
Medica
Damascus
and
Shifa,
Alpha,
Razi,
El
Saad
in
Aleppo)
and
meetings
with
senior
management
of
the
companies
were
organized
in
presence
of
the
Director
of
National
Control
Laboratory
of
drugs
and
Director
of
Pharmaceutical
Inspection.
Seminar:
The
seminar
organized
by
the
Minister
of
Health
took
place
on
October
25th
2010
in
Damascus.
Participants
were
Representatives
of
National
Regulatory/Authority
and
of
Ministry
of
Health
including
National
Control
Laboratory
and
Representatives
of
selected
Pharmaceutical
companies.
The
seminar
was
opened
by
the
Minister
of
Health
who
insisted
on
the
importance
of
vaccines
and
immunizations
in
the
context
of
Syria
and
the
need
to
develop
and
implement
a
well
planned
strategy
on
vaccine
production
in
the
collaboration
with
all
the
concerned
parties.
The
seminar
was
opened
by
the
Minister
of
Health
who
insisted
on
the
importance
of
vaccines
and
immunizations
in
the
context
of
Syria
and
the
need
to
develop
and
implement
a
well
planned
strategy
on
vaccine
production
in
the
collaboration
with
all
the
concerned
parties.

were

regional
vaccine
markets,
regional
needs
in
terms
of
vaccine
supply
and
challenges
faced
in
the
vaccine
supply
and
production
in
developing
countries.

on
the
steps
and
requirements
for
vaccine
production.
-
Dr
Houda
LANGAR
on
WHO
approach
for
WHO
prequalification.
After
the
visits
of
the
five
pharmaceutical
companies
in
Damascus
and
Aleppo
,the
mission
started
to
prepared
the
next
steps
and
recommendations
for
ministry
of
health,
manufacturers
and
WHO.
