Workshop on Applied epidemiology
Aleppo 23/11-16/12/2010

Country consultations for global HIV/AIDS strategy, Damascus, Syrian Arab Republic, 16 September 2010

Responding to the willingness of the Syrian Ministry of Health to establish a Centre For Disease Control in Syria, and in line with  WHO commitments to  Build the capacities of the human resources in the field of epidemiology ,WHO conducted a 21 day workshop on “Applied epidemiology” in Aleppo  between 23/11/2010 till 16/12/2010. The workshop was conducted in cooperation with the Faculty of Medicine /Alexandria University/ and the Ministry of Health. It targeted 24 physicians from 5 governorates ( Aleppo-Edleb-Deir Al zor-Al Hasakeh- Damascus-Al Raqa). The selected participants were physicians  working in the communicable and non communicable departments in the different governorates. The selected trainees  supposed to structure the core team of the Centre For Disease Control at the provincial level. To better achieve the workshop objective, WHO contracted Dr. Ahmed Ramadan ,Prof. of Epidemiology at Faculty of Medicine/ Alexandria University / to supervise the training process. Dr. Ramadan invited other three consultants from  Alexandria University to participate in facilitating the course. WHO office also invited   Dr Zouhier Hallaj /RA/EMRO to facilitate the last week of the workshop.

The course provided the participants with the most updated information on applied epidemiology to effectively tackle communicable and non communicable diseases challenges. It also  introduced best practices for epidemiological response when needed.

 The course consists of four training modules:

  1. Vaccine preventable diseases: Applied epidemiology and Health services delivery management.
     

  2. Emerging and reemerging diseases, chronic non communicable disease and applications of IHR( 2005) Prevention of Health Care Associated infection.

  3. Surveillance of communicable diseases and computer applications ( SPSS ).

  4. Chronic non communicable diseases.

  5. Prevention of Health Care Associated infections.                   

Country consultations for global HIV/AIDS strategy, Damascus, Syrian Arab Republic, 16 September 2010The course focused on strengthening epidemiological knowledge and skills, so that participants will be able to apply epidemiological approaches in public health reality.  Several field visits were conducted to some health facilities for this purpose .

The closing session of the  training workshop was attended by Dr Ammar Talas /health director of Aleppo and representative of WHO Syria office, in which Dr. Ahmed Ramadan presented the course evaluation findings  followed by certificate distributions to all trainees
