Global tuberculosis control report 2007 published by WHO

The 11th annual report in the series has been published by WHO on World TB Day 2007. The new report features the latest surveillance data for 2005. Of the 6 WHO regions, the Eastern Mediterranean Region still ranks 5th regarding the achievement of 70% case detection target. The Regional DOTS coverage has significantly increased to 97% compared to 91% in 2004. In 2005, 9 countries of the Region have achieved the treatment success rate targets and 7 countries have achieved the case detection target. However, only 5 countries have achieved both targets including Somalia, one of the high TB burden countries in the Region.

The 10th WHO Global tuberculosis control report 2006

The recently published report confirms that if the observed acceleration in case-finding is maintained, DOTS programmes will detect more than 60% of cases in 2005, but they will fall short of the 70% target. Also, at the end of 2004, DOTS expansion was complete in nine HBCs and nearing completion in five others. Pakistan reported full DOTS coverage by the end of 2005, and coverage has increased considerably in Afghanistan.
