Tenth Meeting of
National Tuberculosis Programme Managers in the Eastern
Mediterranean Region Country exercises on “Where do we want to go in the next 10 years and how?”
In collaboration with the STB/HQ, a workshop to develop a 10-year strategic plan was held in Cairo from 28 to 30 April 2005. This workshop was a part of the global exercise to develop a Global Stop TB Plan.2 (GP2) for 2006 – 2015. The GP2 is to illustrate the strategic directions and relevant cost to achieve the MDG-related TB target. Nine high burden countries of the Region have participated in the Cairo workshop namely (Afghanistan, Djibouti, Egypt, Iran, Morocco, Pakistan, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen), and they have worked together to formulate their 10-year national strategic plans.
The strategic direction that we promote is the “Expanded Global TB Control Strategy. It is a comprehensive strategy, based on the classical DOTS, to address steps to expand DOTS (if not yet 100%), to improve DOTS (or enhance DOTS activities), and to introduce new approaches like PPM, HIV/TB, PAL, DOTS Plus etc. Please see the attached one-page summary of our idea on the Expanded Global TB Control Strategy The strategic plan exercise was done basically in the same line. The countries discussed how they can maintain the current DOTS activities, how they can improve quality of such activities, and how they can introduce new approaches. They also made costing exercise for each of three areas. The attached Excel file shows the provisional outcome of the exercise. It is not yet final, however, it shows the ways of exercise was conducted during the Cairo workshop.
During the NTP managers meeting, a session for 13 countries- those who did not participate in the workshop in April: i.e. Bahrain, Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria Tunisia, and UAE was held. Attached are two files: One in Word explains the list of requirements for the exercise and the other is an Excel file that will help you calculate the costs of your plan over the next 10 years. Further explanation on this exercise is also available in the power point presentation by Ms Andrea Pantoja, and by Dr Salah Ottmani. The template which was used for each country’s costing exercise are accessible through the following link
