Scaling up quality in blood transfusion services

Print

Oman runs a sustainable blood transfusion programme that is largely able to meet the basic needs of the country. Recognizing the importance of haemovigilance as an essential component for quality and safety of blood donation and transfusion, a WHO Mission visited Oman from 4 to 8 January 2015 to assist in establishing a haemovigilance system. The mission involved visits to key institutions involved in blood transfusion services and a national workshop.

Haemovigilance aims to identify and prevent occurrence or recurrence of transfusion related unwanted events, to increase the safety, efficacy and efficiency of blood transfusion, covering all activities of the transfusion chain from donor to recipient.
