A WHO mission to review the injury surveillance system took place from 10 to 14 November 2013. The mission concurred with the Ministry of Health that due to the heavy burden of injuries in Oman, there is an urgent need to establish a robust injury surveillance system and a trauma registry. It also recognized the usefulness of embedding such a system within the current electronic health information system in hospitals. A plan was put in place to pilot test an injury surveillance system in a few selected hospitals and fine-turn such a system before rolling it out throughout the country.
Extensive efforts have been made by the Ministry of Health to promote safety and prevent injuries. Improving the injury surveillance system including establishing a trauma registration is a priority for the Ministry of Health given that nearly 10% of morbidity and mortality in Oman is due to injuries, particularly those related to road safety.
