PAKISTAN - Activities carried out and planned in Pakistan for WHD 2001

• International scientific conference -----25^th –28^th January 2001.

It was participated in by participants from more than 28 countries from all continents,where speaking on the closing ceremony the chief executive of Pakistan ,general pervaiz mussaraf announced that the new legislation on mental health would take effect from 20^th February 2001.

• Meeting of the organizing committee of the international consortium for mental health policy and services.23^rd---26^th January 2001.
• Meeting of the EMR of the international consortium for mental health policy and services 29^TH---31^ST January 2001.
• Training workshop on trauma psychiatry: 23^rd –25^th January 2001

This training workshop was organized at Rawalpindi in collaboration with the faculty of university of Missouri on 23^rd –25^th January 2001 and was widely attended by professionals from all over the country.

• 2^nd annual hamdard psychiatric conference :7^th April 2001 at Karachi

• Declaration of 20^th February 2001 as the National Mental Health day by the government of Pakistan.

• Promulgation of the National mental health ordinance 2001 to replace the old act.(available on this site)

 Integration of mental health in PHC:

• Setting up of the Mental Health Commission to monitor and facilitate the implementation of integration of mental health in PHC .

• Mental health literacy campaign to enhance the awareness of the public about mental health issues with special issues of newspapers ,
• discussions and interviews , public debates on electronic media.
• Preparation of specially designed media kit about mental health issues .

• Visit of the director general WHO to the institute of psychiatry ,WHO collaborating centre Rawalpindi on 28^th February 2001.(presentation available on this page).federal ministers for health and law ,justice and human rights also attended.

 Promotion of mental health:(Destigmatization and Demystification )

• Initiation of integration of mental health component in the curriculum of science teachers training .
• Formalization of linkages between the mental health services in public sector and NGO sector ,starting from January 2001.

• A special issue is being published to coincide with the WHD2001 in April 2001.

GOLD MEDAL Examination For Medical Students In Psychiatry:

• A special competition was organized to encourage undergraduate medical students in the field of psychiatry. Students from allover the country participated .The chief executive of Pakistan distributed cash awards worth Rs.300,000 as a token of his appreciation of the efforts of medical students to come forward and participate .
