WHO resolution on global burden of mental disorders

Print PDF

On 20 January, 2012, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a resolution on the global burden of mental disorders and the need for a comprehensive, coordinated response at the country level, at the end of its annual board meeting in Geneva.

Considering the huge burden of mental health disorders, estimated at 13% of the global burden of disease in 2004; the high treatment gap for mental disorders all over the world; and the fact that persons with mental disorders are often stigmatized, the resolution highlighted the need for comprehensive action from all Member States.

WHO called on Member States to give priority to mental health and develop comprehensive policies and strategies that address the promotion of mental health, and prevention, early identification, care, support, treatment and recovery of mental disorders.

WHO urged countries to consider the need to promote human rights, tackle stigma, empower service users, tackle major modifiable risks, promote public awareness, create opportunities for generating income, provide housing and education, provide health-care service and implement community-based interventions.
