Core Competencies

The core competencies for MEP roles are divided into management, process, and personal development categories. They are at the same time, knowledge- and skill- based.

Management knowledge reflects the ability to:

  • Create an environment that validates personal experiences

  • Continually scan the environment to identify challenges and opportunities to assess internal strengths and weaknesses

  • Mobilize and optimally utilize appropriate local, national and international resources to solve management problems

  • Use effective information management tools and techniques to support decision-making and to disseminate information

  • Demonstrate mediation and negotiation skills

  • Share expertise and build consensus

  • Develop and nurture partnerships, networks, and affiliations to efficiently utilize and leverage resources

  • Describe the implication of relationships between human resource management and finance planning in relationship to the new management environment

Process knowledge reflects the essential skills needed to create and manage in a process improvement environment. It reflects the ability to:

  • Describe the current health care system and define individual and team accountabilities needed to improve the system

  • Practice systems thinking to address organizational change

  • Demonstrate knowledge, skills and attitudes to mentor individuals and teams

  • Identify, prioritize and pursue opportunities to facilitate change and improve the health system

  • Use an evidence-based approach to improve efficiency and effectiveness

  • Use the team approach to effectively plan, implement, and evaluate site improvements

  • Evaluate and improve current management processes and practices

Personal and professional knowledge reflects the essential skills needed to continuously improve personal capacities and to adapt to change. It reflects the ability to:

  • Demonstrate an ability to communicate through feedback, active listening, oral and written techniques and verbal and non-verbal techniques effectively in various situations

  • Demonstrate a commitment to self-improvement and life-long learning at the individual and organizational levels
