Regional
experience In early 2000, the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office of WHO conducted a review of country experiences in healthcare management. Conclusions pointed to the need to strengthen the approach adopted in capacity-building, with the overall aim of improving the performance of health systems. Following the review, a meeting of health management and educational experts was convened in June 2000 in Cairo to agree upon a new framework and approach for improving the management capacity in health systems. Central to this approach was a focus on developing health care sites where a management culture was created that was based on team problem-solving and client-oriented improvements in services and activities. MEP has been introduced into the Region with each experience depending on the specific conditions present in the country. 3 countries stand out as having explored the potential of the programme in depth. The lessons learned from these experiences are crucial for further expansion of MEP within and beyond the Eastern Mediterranean Region. Click on the figure to view each country's experience
