Project 1

  Maximizing the effectiveness of safety measures

Aim of project:   To establish the screening of staff for blood borne pathogens,  improve awareness for standard safety measures used in laboratories and enhance enforcement of standards for disposal of biohazard waste.

Methods used: Questionnaires given to staff to assess their knowledge and enforcement of standards,  analysis of data collected, Pareto chart and fishbone diagram.

 

Solutions:  Development of a database for occupational health, regular examination of staff, formulation of written standards, establishment of a position responsible for safety measures, training schedules for safety measures, clearly defined job descriptions, ensuring availability of supplies, training schedule and guidelines developed for disposal of hazardous materials.

Results:  Standard screening of employees for Hepatitis B, C and HIV/AIDS, training of personnel undertaken on safety measures, policies and procedures, preparation and dissemination of guidelines for safety measures.
