Continuous Personal & Professional Development
Leaders must serve as role models for others in the constantly changing environment of health care. Others often learn by modeling, that is, they learn by following the behaviour of a leader. To be an effective role model in the MEP, you must be willing to engage in the steps of personal and professional development; and, additionally, they should let others know through their behaviour and communications that they are in the process of learning and refining their own skills in an effort to help improve the health system. This module focuses on the importance of continuously developing and improving the self in management practice. This principle reflects the very core of the envisioned MEP culture.
Rationale
In order to successfully challenge a system to change, one must first challenge oneself and continuously change to meet personal and professional needs. A systematic approach to development and a commitment to lifelong learning are critical elements for continuous personal and professional change, which in turn is essential for effectively managing and leading health systems.
Key elements in the module include the core and specific competencies for MEP roles, the process of assessing your own strengths and needs, components of a personal and professional development plan, and the concept of a reflective journal. The module also contains basic knowledge and exercises that develop communication and group participation skills.
Aims
The primary aims of this module are as follows:
To enhance your awareness of the need for and abilities to learn continuously and thus adapt to your environment. Most particularly, it aims to reinforce the fact that change is constant and, as a consequence, health systems and related organizations must constantly adapt to change in order to succeed;
To help you develop communication and group participation skills. These are regarded as essential MEP activities, in the development of your plans.
