Developing and Maximizing Leadership Potential
Learning outcomes
Effective leadership is the basis of organizational effectiveness. Leaders, such as those in MEP roles, must serve as a role model for others in the constantly changing environment of health care. Others often learn by modeling, that is, they learn by following the behaviour of a leader. To be an effective role model for MEP, you must be willing to engage in the steps of personal and professional development; and, additionally, they should let others know through their behaviour and communications that they are in the process of learning and refining their own skills in an effort to help improve the health system.
This module is designed to help you understand your leadership and communication styles by estimating the level of potential that is currently being utilized in the work setting for yourself and your workgroups and to develop ways to maximize that potential.
Rationale
Dynamic and creative leadership is the cornerstone of successful organizations. It is also essential for leading successful change. In order for the sites to improve performance, service, and flexibility, effective leadership is a must. Understanding the leadership role in a changing environment must be supported at all levels of the organization if it is to survive and achieve excellence. Preparing individuals for leadership roles requires a fresh and creative look at the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to fulfill leadership potential.
Aims
This module is designed to help you develop the required knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours necessary for successful leadership in a strategic or systems management environment. There will be a strong focus on leadership style, communication, problem solving, and team building. The module has been developed around new and innovative leadership competencies which are necessary for a changing, growing, improving and dynamic arena.
