Topics covered

A systems perspective is fundamental to successful implementation of the principles of the MEP. This module focuses on the emerging concepts and strategies involved in a systems approach to improving the performance, capacity and assessment of national health systems.  The benefits of a systems approach include an increasing appreciation of the relationship between sites and the health system as a whole, in addition to a growing recognition of the opportunities for management improvements.

Rationale

Any improvement made in the management processes, practices, or structures of a system, affects and is affected by related elements or components of the system. This is true both at the Site and within the larger, national health system context.  A sustainable improvement in any site will involve an appreciation of the interrelationship among subsystems in the national health system. Insights gained from this module will enhance the participants’ capacity to improve their current situation.

It is important that you continually reflect on your perceptions and understanding of the health system and how it is affected by, and adapts to external and internal forces that influence its effectiveness in achieving its goals. Developing this process of reflection on the health system will over time contribute to further developing your role and competencies as a change agent, which you have adopted in implementing the MEP  at your site.

Aims

The primary aims of this module are to help you:

  • To enhance your understanding of the basic concepts of health systems;

  • To  apply these concepts in your work environment;

  • To increase your knowledge and understanding of how health systems function, perform, adapt to changes;

  • To introduce you to the practice of  thinking in terms of systems by synthesizing the complexities of the actual system;

  • To enable you to adopt a systems perspective to problem solving, through an increased understanding of the elements and underlying causes of a problem;

  • To enable you to recognize the related elements of the system that might influence solutions to problems.
