Summary of achievements (2001 - 2004)

El Salam Medical Center

  • Completion of a fence and upgrading of external illumination

  • Utilization of existing equipments to provide new health services

  • 50% increase in the utilization of family planning services in the catchment area during 2001-2002.

  • Launching of health education program aimed at raising the awareness within the population for the complications and dangers of female circumcision

Nasr City Medical Center

  • Shortened waiting time from 120 to 30 minutes

  • Provision of new services through community contribution e.g. physiotherapy, equipment repair and health care waste management

  • 25% increase in the number of children under 5 years attending the laboratory to undertake test for anaemia during 2004

The National Blood Bank

  • Reduction of blood issuing time to 30-35 minutes after request

  • Reduction the percentage of discarded outdated blood units in all 17 blood bank branches to WHO standard of 2%

  • Preparation and distribution of SOPs

El Nozha El Gedida Medical Center

  • Establishment of more comfortable patient waiting area within outpatients department

  • 12% increase in service utilization  from April 2003 to March 2004

  • 10% increase in revenue  from April 2003 to March 2004

  • Training programs for site teams

  • Launching of a family health programme

  • Computerization of the information unit

  • Initiation of a referral system in cooperation with Manshyet El Bakry General Hospital

  • Two assessment for client satisfaction carried out

Abbassia Chest Hospital

  • Preparation of guidelines for laboratory investigation

  • Establishment of the patient waiting area

Central Health Laboratories

  • Establishment of a database for bloodborne pathogens amongst employees

  • Implementation of safety measures, policies and procedures

  • Establishment of a biohazardous waste disposal scheme

Manshyet Nasser

  • Initiation a program to develop chest clinic and to screen target groups for tuberculosis

  • Reduction in the number of residents seeking care in Abbassia Chest Hospital.

Other activities

  • Launching of infection control program in Abbassia fever and chest hospitals and Manshyet Nasser PHC laboratories

  • Reduction of outdated discarded blood units in blood banks of teaching hospitals by 23%

Initiatives initiated by former MEP participants

  • 35% increase in the utilization rate of antenatal care in a 6 month period at El Delta Medical Center

  • Increase in the number of deliveries undertaken from 4 to 15 cases per month at El Delta Medical Center

The center is now ranked as the best medical center in the health zone with respect to the provision of family planning services and health services for homeless children.

  • The establishment of a computerized database for private medical services in El Salam health zone. 

Information has been collected on private clinics, hospitals, opticians and renal dialysis centers.

  • Promoting thyroid screening services for neonates in new health facilities in the Heliopolis health zone.

 This initiative increased screening coverage from 38% to 60% during 2004.
