Health and Biomedical Information Support

Back

Situation Analysis:

Health information Support and Medical Library Services in Lebanon are provided by the Ministry of Health, health and medical care units and medical libraries attached to medical colleges. The effort made by the American University is well recognized.

During the biennium 1996-1997, as part of the PLL project in Lebanon, the Health Information support Unit assisted the Ministry of Health to make available and to provide access to health literature to Ministry staff and end users. Subscription to medline for AUB was also renewed and WHO and EMRO publications were distributed to Ministry staff and other professional institutions.

Supply of health literature will continue to be needed, in the same manner as it was in the last biennium. WHO will continue to support the information network developed with AUB to make databases available for users from other universities medical colleges, government institutions, including WHO and MOH and other interested parties.

This involvement in this network will be further strengthened through the establishment of a joint WHO/MOH/Lebanese University National Health Information Center, initiated during the biennium 2000-2001.
Recognizing the importance of health information, its dissemination, and the lack of infrastructure at the MOPH, which limits the use of health and biomedical information, the project for establishing a joint Health Information Center aims at making available a core collection of health reference materials, research papers, health needs assessment, health condition studies, scientific and medical journals, and selected public health educational materials for use by the public. The Center will have the following objectives:
- To provide, upon request, services to individuals and institutions in support of dissemination of health and medical highly selected public health information
- To help both professionals and the general public, specially high school and University students, locate health information through identification of health information resources, referral systems, and publications.
- To make Health publications and documents of WHO, LU, MOPH and other health institutions, viewed as essential for any health science center, available and accessible to all interested users in an equitable manner
- Others to be developed

Objectives:

- To strengthen the national health information services in health care institutions and medical colleges through proper health information support and networking.
- To provide the public at large with updated data and information on health, environment and related disciplines
