NURSING DEVELOPMENT

Situation Analysis

There have been several meetings initiated by the Jordan University, with the participation of all health sectors (MOH, JU, JUST, RMS, private hospital syndicate and nursing syndicate), to discuss the regulation of the nursing profession including certification, licensure, and accreditation. The MOH will be leading in preparing and calling for a national meeting to develop the national strategy for nursing profession, that will also be supportive to the activation of the Higher Council for Nursing.

The Directorate of Health in collaboration with the PHCI project - an USAID funded project, had revised the ssociate nursing curriculum and had put special emphasis on the PHC side rather than the previous hospital-based nursing curriculum.

During the last two years, the Diploma Level (36 Months) assistant nurses (18 months) in hospital based schools) have been discontinued and replaced by the Associate Nursing Program, which is supervised by and linked to the Al Balqa University. This program allows the student to bridge to universities for another two years university program, to get the Bachelor Degree.

DET and PHCI are working on improving and reviewing the midwifery program during the coming year.

As for the continuous nursing training, DET-MOH is providing through the next biennium, 12 Training courses for nurses, mainly in the remote PHC Centers, providing nursing education bulletin quarterly, conducting visits to other countries for 4 people, buying some nursing journals and providing the DET with a data show for continuous education.

Main achievements and constraints

One of the PHCI components is to improve the quality of nursing services through training, guidelines, protocols, standards and continuous education. PHCI project is also providing (in its training component) a 6-month PHC training program for trainers, who will work in PH Centers and provide further training to other employees.
