HEALTHY VILLAGES
Situation analysis
PHC services in Jordan are
well established and receive
strong governmental support.
MOH is the main provider of
health care in Jordan.
Involvement of community is
needed in order to expand
and strengthen the strategy
of Primary Health Care. The
basic development needs
concept has been implemented
in Jordan for 12 years
through Noor El Hussein
Foundation.
Currently the healthy
villages project is managed
by the MOH and supported by
WHO in order to promote
involvement of local
community in health
activities.
Income generating component
of the project is still not
implemented. It is planned
to include it in the current
biennium. A short term
consultant visited the
villages, advised on
strengthening the BDN
component and assisted the
communities in selected
vilages to develop proposals
for income generation
projects. Noor El-Hussein
Foundation (NHF) is also
implementing the BDN project
to improve the quality of
life for local communities
in the villages. There is
close collaboration between
the two projects. A team of
experts and WHO staff
members will be evaluating
the BDN initiatives and
documenting the achievements
made in December 2001. Based
on the outcome of the
evaluation, a national plan
of action to strengthen BDN
activities will be
developed.
Main achievements
17 new projects have been
initiated. Evaluation of
existing experience has been
initiated.
Main constraints
-
Since all the activities
of this type of project
is field-related, a
major constraint is lack
of on-the-spot
transportation.
-
More intensive work is
needed to strengthen the
programme. Multi-sectoral
joint work should be
promoted.
Objectives
-
Improvement of health
through meeting the
basic development needs
-
Community empowerment
-
Community involvement in
development of the
programme in rural
areas.
Priorities
-
Expanding the project by
involving new villages
(11 new projects).
-
Including income
generating loans within
the project.
Indicators, evaluation
and monitoring
-
Number of new villages
included in the project.
-
Number of income
generating loans offered
to the community.
-
Number of surveys
carried on in the new
villages.
Supervision and monitoring
will be carried out through
monthly reports submitted by
the council of the villages
following their monthly
meeting to project
management. These reports
will cover the activities,
the problems faced and the
villages' needs in all
sectors.
