18 December 2017 – Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, World Health Organization Director-General, met with Dr Mahmoud Al- Sheyyab, Minister of Health of Jordan, at WHO headquarters in Geneva in November 2017.

During their meeting, they discussed various key public health issues affecting Jordan, including antimicrobial resistance, tobacco control, mental health and challenges to the health system in Jordan, including the need to decrease vaccine costs to provide vaccination for the large influx of Syrian refugees.

“Today, Minister Mahmoud Al-Sheyyab from Jordan visited the World Health Organization. We commend their generosity welcoming refugees from Syria. More international support is needed to help alleviate the challenges faced by the health systems,” Dr Tedros said in a tweet following the meeting.

Dr Al-Sheyyab thanked WHO for its efforts in supporting Jordan public health priorities, including health systems strengthening and many other public health priorities.

The meeting reinforced the strong collaboration between WHO and the Ministry of Health of Jordan and their joint aim of achieving the targets of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
