8 May 2017 – The Ministry of Health of Jordan requested support from the WHO country office to review and update its strategic health plan for 2013–2017 in order to develop its plan for the next 5 years.

Universal health coverage has been identified as a top priority, and is reinforced by target 8 of Sustainable Development Goal 3 "Achieve universal health coverage, including financial risk protection, access to quality essential health-care services and access to safe, effective, quality and affordable essential medicines and vaccines for all". Health policies and plans that are being reoriented to make progress towards universal health coverage are also advancing capacity in the Ministry of Health.

Several development partners were also involved in the review of Jordan's strategic health plan, including UNICEF, the United Nations Population Fund, the World Bank and USAID and based on meetings with several stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministries of Health and Planning, parliamentarians and International Cooperation, there was strong consensus to conduct a mapping exercise for health system governance and health-related institutions and a thorough institutional review of the Ministry of Health with respect to functions, structure and capacities.

The global initiative of the UHC2030 partnership was presented, co-hosted by WHO and World Bank, to introduce the idea of developing a Jordan Health Compact after agreement on priorities and the main principles for collaboration among all health-related development partners in Jordan. Jordan will be adding its name as a signatory to the Global Health Compact for universal health coverage during May's World Health Assembly in Geneva.
