Training workshop on Patient Safety Friendly Hospital Initiative: Consolidation and Regional Expansion

Eight Iraqi nationals from the Ministry of Health participated in a WHO regional workshop on implementation of the Patient Safety Friendly Hospital Initiative which was conducted in Amman from 11‐13 April. This initiative involves the assessment of the level of patient safety in healthcare facilities and provides such facilities with tools for improvement.
The objectives of the workshop were as follows: (1) to discuss and share information on the current situation in Iraq with regard to anesthesia, intensive care and infection control in Iraq and indentify major gaps; (2) to share global experiences and best practices in Anesthesia, Critical Care and Infection Control; (3) to map the stakeholders and partners involved in the area and identify their current potential roles in scaling up these services; and (4) to agree on priority actions and a road map to improve Anesthesia, Intensive Care and Infection Control services in Iraq.
The objectives of the current workshop were: (1) to introduce the initiative to countries in which it has not yet been implemented with a focus on countries in conflict; (2) educate a team of nationals on the initiative specifically its general concepts, tools, benefits and methods of implementation; (3) share lessons learnt from pilot sites where the initiative was implemented especially the challenges met during implementation and to discuss mechanisms of addressing these challenges; and (4) assist countries in developing action plans for implementation and expansion of the said initiative.
