United Nations enable logoIn October 1992, as the United Nations Decade of Disabled Persons (1983–1992) drew to an end, 3 December was designated by the UN General Assembly as an annual International Day of Disabled Persons. The first day was marked on 3 December 1992. In 2008, the title of the day was changed to the International Day of Persons with Disabilities by General Assembly resolution 62/127. The new title was used in 2008 and thereafter.

Over the years the Day has focused on different issues to promote a better understanding of disability and to muster support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also aims at raising awareness of the benefits of the integration of persons with disabilities in different aspects of life.
