Developing an electronic health sciences library network in the Eastern Mediterranean Region has been one of the prime objectives of the Regional Office. Building the health sciences virtual library is a major step towards realization of this objective. In the context of the Eastern Mediterranean Region, we have adopted an internet-based approach to build the virtual library supported by off-line digital resources that would:
1- Enable health sciences professionals to communicate, participate and add value by accessing and sharing knowledge from available sources;
2- "having a library means to have access to library services from an adequate collection, qualified staff or from a library system and not necessarily to have a library building".
To make the virtual library work with active partnership we encourage and support health care professionals and institutions to:
a) Get access to the Internet which hosts most of the health information resources, and;
b) Convert local information resources to electronic or digital formats, as these are essential for partnering in the virtual library.
This CD-ROM is the first in a series of products to support the above objectives. On regular basis we will update it and keep users informed of new developments. Your feedback would be highly appreciated.
