Dr Ala Alwan was appointed Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean by the WHO Executive Board in January 2012. Prior to assuming his position as Regional Director, Dr Alwan was Assistant Director-General for Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health at WHO headquarters in Geneva, where he led the work by WHO that resulted in the adoption of the Political Declaration on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases by the United Nations General Assembly in September 2011.
