Lebanon
launched the National Good
Governance for Medicines Framework
26 June 2009
On 26 June 2009, the Lebanese
Ministry of Public Health in
collaboration with the World Health
Organization officially launched the
national framework on good
governance for medicines programme.
A national stakeholders meeting was
held under the patronage of HE
Minister of Public Health, Dr Jawad
Khalife.
The purpose of this event was to
share the GGM framework with a
larger group of stakeholders and
make it publicly available for
feedback prior to its finalization.
Speakers were from the WHO country
office team, from the MOPH team and
from the Lebanese good governance
for medicines steering committee and
task force.
With the success of this event,
Lebanon moved the national good
governance for medicines programme
forward to Phase III, which involves
an institutional learning process in
the application of new
administrative procedures for
increased
transparency/accountability and the
development of leadership
capabilities in the public
pharmaceutical sector.
With that, Lebanon is the second
Eastern Mediterranean Region country
to enter phase III of the WHO Good
Governance for Medicines programme.
The complexity of phase III stems
partly from the integration of
policy and regulatory functions of
national authorities with the
behavior change and socialization
aspects of promoting integrity in
the public sector. WHO will continue
to provide technical support to the
national GGM team.
