Letter from the Editor
The redesigned EMHJ has now been running for one year with its new, fresh look and monthly publication. This final issue (no. 12) of the current volume provides us with an opportunity to look back and see how the Journal has further evolved. EMHJ published 233 articles in 2010, which included a supplement on Pakistan, as compared to 186 papers in 2009. This has helped to significantly reduce the backlog of accepted papers awaiting publication; time from acceptance to publication has gone from an average of 2 years 6 months at the end of 2009 to 1 year 7 months at the end of 2010. It is continuing to decrease and in 2011 we aim to bring it to no more than 8 months.
The time from submission to publication of an article in EMHJ is, however, also affected by the time taken for authors to revise their manuscripts in the light of editorial and/or reviewers' comments. In addition, we commonly observe that submitted papers do not conform with the Journal policy/guidelines, in particular the size of the manuscript and formatting of the references! We would like to emphasize that authors can facilitate the processing of their submitted manuscripts if they strictly adhere to the EMHJ Guidelines. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our contributors, reviewers, Editorial Board members, as well as the graphics, printing and distribution staff of the Regional Office, who have all put substantial time and effort into producing this new look of the Journal. We sincerely hope that everyone will offer the same level of support in the future as this will help us fulfill the future goals of EMHJ: high quality, faster publication, more focus on public health and health systems research, and a greater reach and dissemination of knowledge produced with the help of EMHJ beyond the established and conventional boundaries.

عام مضى على صدور المجلة الصحية لشرق المتوسط، في ثوبها الجديد، ومظهرها العصري وطبعتها الشهرية. ويتيح لنا هذا العدد الأخير من المجلد الحالي، الفرصة – لاستعراض واستـذكار مسار تطـوّر المجلة. ففي عام 2010، نشرت المجلة 233 مقالة، شملت ملحقاً حول باكستان، وذلك مقارنةً بـ 186 ورقة بحثية نُشرت عام 2009. وقد ساهم هذا على نحو كبير في الحدّ من تراكم البحوث التي حظيت بالقبول وتنتظر النشر، إذ انخفض متوسط المدة الزمنية بين قبول المقالة ونشرها من عامين وستة أشهر في نهاية عام 2009، إلى عام واحد وسبعة أشهر في نهاية عام 2010. وهذا الوقت آخذ في التقلص، فقد وضعنا نصب أعيننا أن لا تزيد المدة على ثمانية أشهر في عام 2011 إن شاء الله.
ونَوَدُّ الإشارة هنا إلى أن الوقت الذي يفصل بين موعد استلام المقالة وبين موعد نشرها في المجلة، يتأثر أيضاً بالمدة التي يستغرقها الباحثون في مراجعة نصوص مقالاتهم في ضوء ملاحظات وتعليقات المحررين والمراجعين. هذا علاوة على أننا كثيراً ما نلاحظ عدم تطابق البحوث المقدمة مع سياسات المجلة أو الدلائل الإرشادية الخاصة بها، ولاسيَّما حجم النص وطريقة تنسيق المراجع. ونَوَدُّ في هذا المقام التأكيد على أن في وُسع الباحثين تيسير الإجراءات المرتبطة بنصوصهم المقدَّمة إذا ما التزموا التزاماً وثيقاً بالدلائل الإرشادية الخاصة بالمجلة الصحية لشرق المتوسط، وهذه الدلائل تُطبع في أول عدد من كل مجلد علاوة على توافرها على الموقع الإلكتـروني التالي:

كما نَوَدُّ اغتنام هذه المناسبة لإزجاء الشكر إلى جميع المساهمين، والمراجعين، وأعضاء هيئة التحرير، والعاملين في التصميم، والطباعة، والتوزيع في المكتب الإقليمي، الذين لم يألوا وقتاً أو جهداً لإصدار المجلة في ثوبها الجديد. ونحن، بكل أمانة وصدق، يحدونا الأمل أن يواصل كل شخص تقديم نفس مستوى الدعم على الأقل في المستقبل لمساعدتنا على بلوغ المرامي المستقبلية للمجلة الصحية لشرق المتوسط، والمتمثلة في: الارتقاء بالجودة، والإسراع بالنشر، والمزيد من التـركيز على الصحة العمومية وبحوث النظم الصحية، مع توسيع نطاق نشر وبث المعارف الصادرة من خلال المجلة، لتصل إلى ما هو أبعد من الحدود التقليدية المتوطدة.
