Second Regional Training of Trainers Course on Medical Journal Publishing, in Shiraz, Islamic Republic of Iran 14-17 November 2011

WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean is organizing the Second Regional Training of Trainers Course on Medical Journal Publishing, a four day training course, in Shiraz, Islamic Republic of Iran 14-17 November 2011, in collaboration with the Shiraz University of Medical Sciences. The first course was held in December 2009 and trainers were trained from Egypt, Jordan, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Sudan ,Tunisia http://www.emro.who.int/EMAME/Education.htm .This second course is targeted at the following countries: Afghanistan, Bahrain, Djibouti, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Syrian Arab Republic, United Arab Emirates, Yemen.

The overall objective of the meeting is to promote the standards of scientific papers and biomedical journals in the Region. The specific objectives are to:

  • Train in-country trainers on all aspects of medical journal publishing

  • Enable trainers to help editors set goals and establish a vision for their journals

  • Outline the roles and responsibilities of the editor(s) of a journal, the reviewers and technical editors, and  the process of review

  • Outline the production process and enable editors to set policies and standards for journals

The outcome of the training course will be trained trainers in medical journal publishing who will be expected to conduct at least one course in their country in the following 12 months, using the training materials developed for the course. Participants should, preferably, have some experience as editor or as associate/assistant editor of a peer-reviewed medical journal, as well as experience in publishing their own research, peer review and teaching. Participants should have expressed commitment to delivering the course following training, to editors and potential editors within the country. As this course will be held in English, candidates should be English speaking or have an excellent command of English. In addition, course materials will be available in Arabic for Arabic-speaking participants. A copy of the course schedule is below. If you belong to one of these countries, please note that official invitations to invite a participant from each of these 12 countries have been sent to the Ministry of Health. If you think you might be interested to participate you may contact the relevant focal point in the ministry to express your interest and wish to be considered. Unlike previous events we have supported, please do not submit your interest directly to WHO or to me, although of course I would be pleased to answer any queries you may have.

Day 1:

Ø  Session 1.1 – General introduction to the international journals environment

o   Session objective: at the end of this session participants will have a greater understanding of the journals and research communication environment, and of changes that are taking place and how these changes will affect their journals

Ø  Session 1.2 – Policies: journal scope and structure

o   Session objective: at the end of this session participants will be able to describe their current journal scope and structures and determine whether changes are required

Ø  Session 4.1 – adult training – ensuring participation

o   Session objective: at the end of this session participants will have a greater understanding of how to run adult education events where discussion and participation are paramount

Ø  Session 4.2 – writing and running exercises and discussions

o   Session objective: at the end of this session participants will be able to create and run workshop exercises and to facilitate discussion

Day 2:

Ø  Session 1.3 – Policies: ethics

o   Session objective: at the end of this session participants will be able to establish and implement clear policies for their community (authors, reviewers, editors)

Ø  Session 1.4 – Policies: journal management and governance

o   Session objective: at the end of this session participants will have a greater understanding of different managerial structures and be able to identify suitable financial and business models for their journal

Ø  Session 4.3 – Presentation skills

o   Session objective: at the end of this session participants will feel more confident about presenting information and how to use tools to ensure that their message and information is conveyed clearly

Ø  Session 4.4 – Planning and running a training workshop

o   Session objective: at the end of this session participants will be able to plan and implement efficient workshop events

Day 3:

Ø  Session 2.1 – The editorial team

o   Session objective: at the end of this session participants will be able to determine the optimum editorial structure for their journal and how to use their editorial members to maximum benefit to the journal

Ø  Session 2.2 – The editorial office and reviewers

o   Session objective: at the end of this session participants will be able to identify ways to increase the efficiency of the editorial office and the journal reviewing processes

Ø  Session 2.3 – Authors

o   Session objective: at the end of this session participants will be able to identify ways of attracting and motivating authors, and of supporting them to provide better quality content

Ø  Session 2.4 – Readers

o   Session objective: at the end of this session participants will have a greater understanding of how to attract readers and ensure that their journal communicates effectively

Day 4:

Ø  Session 3.1 – Production processes

o   Session objective: at the end of this session participants will have a greater understanding of the production procedures and how quality productions can be made more cost-effective

Ø  Session 3.2 – Promotion

o   Session objective: at the end of this session participants will be able to devise appropriate methods to raise the visibility of their journal

Ø  Session 3.3 – Summary session

o   Session objective: at the end of this session participants will have an action plan to take back to their journal
