Essential snake bite safety tips for displaced communities in the Gaza Strip

Print

The presence of snakes near temporary shelters poses a threat to displaced communities in the Gaza Strip where difficult living conditions increase the possibility of encounters with these dangerous reptiles and the serious health issues – paralysis, lasting kidney damage and life-threatening bleeding – that can follow a snake bite.

Common snake bite symptoms include sharp pain at the bite site, swelling, breathing difficulties and a rapid heartbeat. To respond effectively and seek timely medical attention it is essential that symptoms are quickly recognized.

Always:

Immobilize and wrap the affected area

Following a snake bite, keep the affected limb as still as possible to slow the spread of venom. Apply a pressure immobilization bandage if available, starting directly over the bite site and wrapping tightly enough to lightly compress the tissue but not so tight as to cut off blood flow, then extend the wrapping to cover the entire limb.

Stay calm

Minimize movement and try to keep your heart rate low to prevent the rapid circulation of venom.

Clear the area around shelters

Regularly remove trash and debris from around your shelter to eliminate snake hiding places.

Secure your shelter

Use materials like fabric or plastic to block potential entry points for snakes into your living space.

Wear protective clothing

Always wear shoes and, if possible, thick clothing that covers the legs to protect against bites when moving through areas where snakes may be present.

Never:

Provoke snakes

Never try to capture or kill a snake. Most bites occur when a snake is disturbed. Slowly back away to a safe distance and alert others to the snake's presence.

Ignore warning signs

Be vigilant and pay attention to any community alerts or signs indicating the presence of snakes.

Use ineffective barriers

Avoid makeshift barriers that don't securely block snake entry into your tent or shelter.

Forget local help contacts

Ensure you know where the nearest health volunteers or clinics are so you can quickly seek assistance if a snake bite occurs.

Neglect symptoms

Never ignore snake bite symptoms such as severe pain, swelling or difficulty breathing. Seek immediate medical help.
