World Health Day 2010

Meetings and events

World Health Day, celebrated annually on 7 April, marks the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO) and is a day used by the Organization, its Member States and partners to highlight a pressing health issue. The theme for World Health Day 2010 is health and urbanization. Health and urbanization was selected as the theme for next year’s event given the grave impact and health challenges caused by rapid urbanization on health, particularly in the developing world.

Urban health as a concept incorporates many areas: the social determinants of health, environmental health, violence, road safety, healthy lifestyles, food safety and security, healthy housing and space, recreational facilities and community belonging. Since 1986, WHO has been promoting urban health through the healthy city programme. In 1992 the Regional Office issued a resolution urging Member States to promote the concept of healthy cities. The resolution was adopted, however, the healthy city programme in the Region still requires additional resources and greater commitment from all stakeholders. World Health Day 2010 provides a unique opportunity for WHO to again be at the forefront of advancing the agenda of urban health.

On the occasion of World Health Day 2010, a global initiative “1000 cities, 1000 lives” will be promoted. The initiative is aimed at engaging 1000 cities across the world in a set of activities intended to create physical, mental and environmental health benefits, provide substantial opportunities for small businesses and provide an overall boost to the well-being of participating cities and their citizens. In the Eastern Mediterranean Region, plans will involve seeking the agreement of the mayors and heads of city health departments and other development sectors of at least 150 cities to join the global initiative and plan according to their local context. This network of cities in the Region will be designated as “health-friendly cities”. WHO country offices and mayors of the volunteering cities will sign a letter of cooperation and commit to implementing World Health Day activities according to their capacities, needs and resources. Funds will be generated at the city level by channelling existing resources to promote the urbanization and health agenda, in collaboration with local donors and potential partners.

On Friday 9 April 2010 a number of activities to promote health equity in urban areas and to improve the health and standard of living of communities will take place. These may cover a range of different activities, such as holding mass exercise, enlisting the involvement of sporting and entertainment celebrities in activities, conducting special fun events, ensuring healthy eating and no smoking, conducting clean-up campaigns and holding mayors’ forums, etc. For further information on World Health Day and how to register a city to participate in such activities please visit: http://www.who.int/whd2010.
