Regional strategies and policies related to community-based initiatives are developed in line with global and regional commitments related to health equity, social determinants of health and promotion of urbanization and health. This commitment was reinforced by Member States of the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region during the Kobe Call to Action and Rio Political Declaration held in Kobe, Japan, in November 2010 and in Brazil in October 2011, respectively.
Regional strategies and policies are currently under revision according to challenges being faced by countries as a result of recent political activity and change. WHO will continue to provide technical support to all Member States to ensure that social and health-related interventions have an impact on people's quality of life with priority given to disadvantaged and vulnerable groups.
Regional strategies and policies for community-based initiatives ensure that the community is actively involved in local health policy and planning processes and countries are advocating for universal access to quality primary health care services through community ownership and effective intersectoral collaboration.
