The community-based initiatives programme was introduced in occupied Palestinian territory in 2010. The healthy schools initiative was implemented in the Ramallah and Nablus districts to cover a population of 9000 students from 15 different schools in both districts. The programme supports a range of activities, including: raising awareness on health, the environment and nutrition, conducting social activities and improving school infrastructure.
The main challenges have proven to be convincing schools to participate in the programme, overcoming difficulties in the implementation process and limited funds.
Programme achievements, however, have included: the provision of health and environmental education for children at participating schools; creating a strong sense of social responsibility, community participation and teamwork among children; and improving environmental facilities and the basic infrastructure of participating schools.
Key partners in the programme are the Ramallah and Nablus municipalities, the Ministries of Health and Education and public and community organizations with sponsorship from the private sector.
