The community-based initiatives programme was introduced in Lebanon in 2011 in the city of Tripoli. The programme supports a range of activities, including creating healthy school environments, ensuring food safety, managing solid waste and enforcing tobacco control initiatives. The main challenges for the programme in Lebanon are the political situation and a lack of funds.
Implementation of the programme, however, has led to the development and dissemination of health and development-related educational and awareness material, awareness-raising sessions and campaigns on tobacco control and other health issues and training on food safety and good manufacturing practices.
Key partners are the Municipality of Tripoli, nongovernmental organizations and the Ministry of Public Health.
