Under-five mortality and its causes
Sources of data for tables and graphs: Inter-Agency Child Mortality Estimation Group An Inter-Agency Child Mortality Estimation Group (IACMEG), which includes WHO, UNICEF, the United Nations Population Division, the World Bank and independent academics, was established to carry out collaborative assessments of under-five and infant mortality rates in countries and monitor trends, to ensure among others consistency and comparability of data. Under-five mortality in the Eastern Mediterranean Region and countries Figures shown on this page are from the most recent World Health Statistics or World Health Report, published by the World Health Organization. The reports present the latest available health statistics for WHO's Member States together with a description of how estimates have been made. The WHO Statistical Information System (WHOSIS) provides additional information, including definitions of indicators. The Eastern Mediterranean Regional Health System Observatory contains health system profiles and database for countries of the Region. The indicators on child mortality refer to the following: - Under-five mortality rate (probability of dying by age 5 per 1000 live births) - Infant mortality rate per 1000 live births - Neonatal mortality rate per 1000 live births Neonatal mortality rates in the Eastern Mediterranean Region by country (table) : 2004 Ranking of countries in the Eastern Mediterranean Region by under-five mortality rate (table) : 2006, 2007, 2008
Under-five mortality rates in countries in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (graph): 2006, 2007
Percentage contribution to total infant deaths in the Eastern Mediterranean Region by country: (graph) 2007, 2008, 2009
Causes of under-five deaths in the Eastern Mediterranean Region and countries Estimating the distribution of causes of under-five deaths is a major focus of the work of the Child Health Epidemiology Reference Group (CHERG). This Group includes a group of technical experts external to the UN system and, within WHO, its work is coordinated by the Department of Child and Adolescent Health and Development (CAH) in close collaboration with the Department of Measurement and Health Information System (MHI). Estimates include eight cause categories only.
