The
table
shows the year in which countries implementing IMCI in the Eastern
Mediterranean Region have introduced the community component, in
relation to the overall implementation of the strategy by phase.
“Introduction” here refers to the formal establishment by ministries
of health of a committee or working group on the community
component, considered as the first key step. As more experience has
been gained in the Region, countries adopting the IMCI strategy have more
recently tended to introduce the community component at an
earlier stage. Implementation has been linked with existing,
promising community initiatives in some countries, such as the Basic
Development Needs (BDN) initiative in Sudan and the Lady Health
Workers (LHW) programme in Pakistan. In general, while the health
system aspect of the IMCI strategy has been implemented at a faster
pace, implementation of the community component has been lagging
behind in many countries in the Region.
