First Meeting for the Eastern Mediterranean and
Arab Forum on Bioethics in Research (12-14 August 2008)

The First Meeting for the Eastern Mediterranean and Arab Region will be held in the Kuwait Hall of Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office of the World Health Organization in Egypt from  12 to 14 August 2008. The Forum will discuss the challenges to the application and contribution of Bioethics in the Region and on the promotion of bioethical principles as a whole of the reception and development of International Scientific Research in the Region, with respect to Human Dignity and Human Rights. The suggested topic for this First meeting of the forum is: "Challenges to Ethical Considerations in Research in the East Mediterranean and Arab Region: Research Subjects, Researchers and Research Ethics Committees Perspectives". Presentations will address one of the topics listed in the following:

  1. Informed consent: Researchers’ perspectives, challenges in the field, REC review challenges.

  2. Awareness of ethical considerations in research: what do people know about research, and what is their willingness to participate in research.

  3. Knowledge of research ethics among researchers: how much do researchers know about ethics of research.

  4. Training of research ethics committee members: how and what are the needs.

  5. Ethics codes and guidelines in the Region: evaluate the importance of national guidelines.

  6. Ethics codes and guidelines in the Region: ability of international guidelines to work at the national level in the Region.

  7. Developing national/regional codes of ethics of research: methods and challenges.

The meeting of the forum will hold for the very first time in the Region, a Forum of consultation and dialogue in the fundamental field of Bioethics in research between:

  1. Public institutions, including Member States,

  2. Regional and International Experts;

  3. Organizations representing the Civil Society;

  4. Scientists interested in bioethics;

  5. Experts from the United Nations organizing partners.

The forum is co-organized by the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office (EMRO) of the World Health Organization, United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organization (UNESCO Cairo Office), Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) and Middle East Research Ethics Training Initiative (MERETI), University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), USA.

Now the Call for Abstracts is opened.

Deadline:  31 May 2008
