The Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean of the World Health Organization (WHO) held an intercountry workshop on planning and implementation of the IMCI community childcare component in five countries of the Region, in Cairo, from 29 June to 4 July 2002.

The objectives of the workshop were to:

  • review community component progress in Egypt, Morocco, Pakistan, Sudan and Yemen
  • discuss the use of the regional framework for the community component of the integrated childcare strategy, IMCI, as a practical tool to plan community interventions
  • identify common constraints and issues in planning and implementation of the IMCI community component
  • prepare 12-month plans for the IMCI community component.

The workshop represented a valuable opportunity to exchange experiences, review country progress and develop an outline of country plans of action.
