29 May 2025, Cairo, Egypt – During the 7th Arab Water Week, held from 4 to 5 May 2025 in Jordan, the Climate Change, Health and Environment Unit at the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean participated in a technical session on sanitation safety planning (SSP), organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization under the Regional Water Scarcity Initiative.

By emphasizing the importance of SSP as a key health risk-based management tool for sanitation systems, including safe reuse of treated wastewater, and with a focus on protecting public health and supporting climate-resilient sanitation systems, the session underlined the need for cross-sectoral coordination, integration of SSP into national policies, and the strengthening of institutional capacities to support sustainable and safe sanitation and wastewater reuse practices.

WHO is committed to advancing health-protective sanitation planning across the Region, in alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 6.
