60 Gaza Midwives Graduate from WHO ‘Safe Childbirth’ Training
Course
Gaza:
Sixty practical midwives graduated February 5 in Gaza from a 3-month
training course that focused on the theory and practice of safe
childbirth, organized by the WHO Safe Childbirth program team in Gaza.
The course has a large component of practical training. This component
was held at Shifa and Nasser Hospitas in Gaza and Khan Younis, which are
some of the maternity units where the WHO Safe Childbirth program has
been working since 2009. The trainees included 56 midwives working
across the Gaza strip in all Palestinian Ministry of Health hospitals
and four midwives from Al Awda hospital, a local NGO. NORWAK funded the
training activity.

The
Safe Childbirth program aims to prevent maternal and neonatal deaths and
complications by improving childbirth services in Gaza. In late
January, 70 Gaza health workers from Nasser hospital in Khan Younis
participated in a “Scientific Day” focusing on natural birth care and
safe delivery. Specialty topics discussed were: birth plan, management
of post-partum hemorrhage, strategies to avoid episiotomy,
evidenced-based practices, and addressing anemia in pregnant women.
WHO Facilitates Turkish Donation of $1.6 M in Medicines to Gaza
Gaza:
On February 2, 2012, WHO oPt facilitated the entry of 10 truckloads of
medications and medical disposables donated by the Turkish government to
MoH-Gaza. The humanitarian aid was moved through Ashdud port to Karam
Abu Salem crossing into Gaza, and directly to the MoH Central Drug Store
in Gaza City under the supervision of WHO and representatives of the
Turkish Cooperation and Development Agency (TIKA). The 190 pallets were
to be inventoried and eventually disbursed to MoH hospital and primary
health care facilities. Turkey made the emergency donation to help
resupply more than 130 out-of-stock drugs and 100 medical disposables
reported by the MoH. Average monthly zero stock levels in 2011 amounted
to 32% of essential drugs and 22% of medical disposables.
The
Turkish emergency shipment, containing 57 different medicines, and 43
different medical disposable items, was valued at USD 1.6 million. WHO
coordinated the arrival and transport of the shipment, with the
cooperation of the Palestinian National Authority and the local
authorities in the Gaza Strip, for the benefit of the Palestinian people
in the Gaza Strip.
