Influenza pandemic alert raised to phase 6
11 June 2009 -- On the basis of available evidence and expert assessments of the evidence, the scientific criteria for an influenza pandemic have been met. The Director-General of WHO has therefore decided to raise the level of influenza pandemic alert from phase 5 to phase 6. "The world is now at the start of the 2009 influenza pandemic," she said at a press conference today.

Health Communications Workshops

The World Health Organization (WHO) in support of the Ministry of Public Health Primary Health Care Network implemented nationally a series of six workshops to help provide needed communication skills to Primary Health Care workers. The workshops’ goal was to help build the capacities of primary health care professionals on communication skills in order to enable them to better deliver quality health messages to the communities

  WHO awarded for international cooperation

 

27 MAY 2009 | GENEVA -- WHO has been given the 2009 Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation. The jury for the award announced its decision today in Oviedo, Spain.

Influenza-like illness in the United States, Mexico
The World Health Organization (WHO) notes that the Eastern Mediterranean Region remains free of influenza A (H1N1) to date and that countries of the Region are prepared to respond to influenza (H1N1) pandemic. However, it reiterates that no country is safe from H1N1 virus transmission.
In response to influenza A (H1N1), ministries of health in all countries of the Region have already started implementing their national strategic plans for preparedness and response, which have detailed guidelines and directions for each and every stage of human pandemic influenza. The WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean and WHO country offices are collaborating with ministries of health and are providing them with updated and accurate technical information on a continuous basis.

World Health Day 2009
“Save lives. Make hospitals safe in emergencies”
The World Health Day is celebrated globally on 7 April to mark the founding of the World Health Organization and to raise awareness on a key global issue. This year’s theme, "Health facilities in emergencies", underscores the importance of investing in health infrastructure that is able to withstand natural hazards, conflicts or a deteriorating situation and that is able to serve and protect people in immediate need.
