From UNAIDS:  The UNAIDS Regional Support Team for the Middle East and North Africa is organizing a Regional Resource Group meeting on HIV prevention, which will take place in Beirut, Lebanon.  This meeting will focus on key populations’ enabling environment, outreach among populations at higher risk in the MENA region, material for outreach programming, and identification of people to be trained in the implementation of outreach programmes.

The Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS) presents the Sixth International Conference on Health Issues in Arab Communities.  This scientific forum reaffirms ACCESS's strong commitment to prevent disease, reduce health disparities and promote wellness.  Among the many health topics to be addressed, concurrent sessions will be held regarding infectious diseases in the Arab world.  These sessions will include an HIV Update: Challenges and Opportunities, and HIV/AIDS Issues in the Arab World: Challenges in Control and Treatment.

Oman recently held a walkathon in observance of World AIDS Day.  The walkathon was followed by a series of educational and entertaining activities with the goal of enhancing awareness and preventing stigma.  The campaign is part of the current 2008-2011 National Response Strategy to reduce the prevalence of HIV/AIDS and to support the human rights of people living with HIV/AIDS.

The WHO Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office in Cairo, Egypt marked the 2010 World AIDS Day by participating in the Light for Rights campaign.  In cities around the world, lights on key landmarks were dimmed to remember the devastating effect AIDS has had on us all.  Lights were then turned back on to illuminate the fundamental rights we all share.

 The independent Reference Group to the United Nations calls for an evidence-based approach to address HIV among injecting drug users.  Their Consensus Statement recommends the implementation of needle and syringe programs, opioid substitution therapy, antiretroviral therapy and sexual risk reduction strategies targeting injecting drug users as a matter of priority.

The 2010 edition of the UNAIDS Report on the global AIDS epidemic includes new country by country scorecards on key issues facing the AIDS response.  Based on the latest data from 182 countries, this global reference book provides comprehensive analysis on the AIDS epidemic and response. For the first time the report includes trend data on incidence from more than 60 countries.

The 2010 Human Development Report by UNDP by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, UNDP Admnistrator Helen Clark and Nobel laureate Amartya Sen explains the significant progress that has been made with respect to Human Development Index indicators in developing nations and the least developed countries.  In addition to gains in health, education, and living standards, the marked impact that the AIDS epidemic has had on progress in some countries is also discussed.

DCD Bulletin: a quarterly publication

Highlights of this issue include an editorial on operational research for communicable disease control and the findings of three recent research studies on malaria, tuberculosis and cutaneous leishmaniasis, in addition to programme news on the regional strategy for the health sector response to HIV 2011–2015. The International Conference on Opportunistic Pathogens will take place in New Delhi, India.  Topics of concern and interest which will be addressed include: contracting opportunistic infections, resistance to anti-retroviral drugs, co-pathogens of HIV, receptor attachment, neuropathology, tissue tropism, testing guidelines, universal testing strategies, and future vaccine candidates against HIV.

WHO staff training course on HIV strategic and operational planning took place in Beirut, Lebanon. The objective of this training was to strengthen WHO staff capacity on development of strategic and operational plans for the health sector in the Eastern Mediterranean Region countries.

The Moroccan Association Against AIDS (ALCS) welcomes the repeal of the ban on entry and residence in the U.S. for people with HIV and calls upon Arab countries who practice such a discriminatory measure to end the prohibition of entry and residence of people with HIV in their territory.
